Where the possibilities are endless
The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) of Crested Butte, Colorado is a non-profit organization that provides year-round recreation activities for people with disabilities and their families.

Summer 2008

6.24.08 The summer solstice brought another beautiful day to Crested Butte and another group to the Adaptive Sports Center. The Serendipity Kids arrived on the 21st with Jan Flowers leading them in 12-day adventure. This group travels to Crested Butte from Houston each summer and enjoys so many life-enriching activities during their stay. The kids all have learning differences and this 12-day experience will help them further develop independence with daily living skills and social interactions, give them better tools for organizing their thoughts and resources and increase their confidence and ability to perform physical, social, and cognitive tasks.

The kids usually arrive home tuckered and changed, with fond memories of an incredible trip to Colorado with peers and teachers. Parents often comment on the wonderful behavior changes their kids develop while on this adventure. A huge thanks goes out to Jan Flowers and her staff for their amazing commitment and inexhaustible energy. Serendipity will leave Crested Butte on July 2nd; then we’ll get ready to prepare our float for an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration!

Tim Ellison participated in the Ride the Rockies bike tour (June 15 – 21) for the first time this year. He was the only handcyclist to complete all 435 miles of the ride. Congrats, Tim!

From
Big Bear, California

How was the ride for you?
The ride was very good. Hard and tiring, but rewarding.

How did it feel to complete the entire ride?
It was a great feeling to complete the ride—that was my goal. It is always nice to achieve your goals. It was quite amazing to finish. It’s a tough thing to do to spend 10 hours on a handcycle every day. The countryside was beautiful, the organization was great.

I didn’t think I’d achieve it—I thought I’d play it by ear. Four hundred and thirty five miles in six days is a lot for old guy like me. I didn’t really get the training I needed. But the further I went the stronger I felt; it kind of got easier as I went.
